Surprise proposal and coffeeshop engagement photos

David contacted me to help capture his surprise proposal to his girlfriend Esther (yup, same name as me!). They were going to be travelling to Montreal from Toronto for a short trip. What better place to propose than romantic Old Montreal? I loved shooting this emotional surprise proposal and especially loved that we finished off their photoshoot with some coffeeshop engagement photos.

Planning the proposal near Notre-Dame Basilica

David was a big fan of the Notre-Dame Basilica, so he set up a plan to propose in the open square near the church. I loved how much research he put into finding the perfect angle in Place d’Armes square. His instructions on the timing and what position he would propose made it feel very much like being in a heist movie!

The surprise proposal

On the morning of the proposal, I was in position and pretending to take tourist photos around Place-d’Armes square.

I spotted the couple approaching and used my wide and long lenses to get photos from a distance.

Once David got down on one knee… I got even closer and had a clear view of their reactions.

Photographing the proposal was a joy! I could see the emotions on their faces in the moment! Esther was surprised and excited and David was so happy.

I kept shooting through the proposal as they talked to each other, hugged and kissed and felt all the feels!

Just engaged in Old Montreal

After a few moments, David pointed out that he had hired a photographer and I came closer to get some romantic “just engaged” photos with the happy couple.

We ducked into Notre-Dame Basilica for a few photos inside, then we headed out and around the neighbourhood for some casual engagement photos in Old Montreal.

Coffeeshop engagement photos

Since the weather was a bit chilly, we winded up the engagement photos at local coffeeshop Melk Bar à Café.

There, the newly engaged couple was able to warm up with some soy lattes and hot chocolates. I took some casual photos of their happy smiles.
